CBS’ “Amazing Race” Insults Vietnam Veterans

B-52 memorial in Hanoi, Vietnam

UPDATE: Read about CBS/Amazing Race apology to Vietnam veterans HERE.

The left-wing assault on Vietnam veterans has diminished over the last few decades. It has become fashionable to acknowledge the service and sacrifice by those veterans (of which I am one) even by those who opposed the war.

For the producers and executives at CBS, it was unbelievably insensitive to take the “Amazing Race” program into Hanoi, only to have the participants used by the communists as propaganda. Remember, the same communists we fought are in charge in Hanoi.

The brutality of the “North Vietnamese” in South Vietnam was a matter of their national strategy (murder of innocent men, women and children, disemboweling pregnant women, and torturing of American prisoners.) While it is true that a very few American soldiers (like William Calley for the My Lai Massacre) violated the rules of war, these disgraceful examples of American troops were punished as they should have been.

The final insult was to take the participants of this TV show to the site of a downed B-52 bomber. Remember that the American crew members of this bomber were either killed or became prisoners-of-war. It was a disgraceful display of disrespect to use this as a “prop” for a simple-minded reality show.

Even Fox News’ Bob Beckel, one of the most liberal commentators on television, thought this was over the top:

BOB BECKEL EXPLODES WITH FURY AT CBS FOR AIRING ‘IDIOTIC’ COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA: ‘TAKE THAT SHOW AND SHOVE IT!’

Bob Beckel, the liberal co-host of Fox News’ “The Five,” had some harsh words for the executives at CBS over the network’s “idiotic” decision to air what some are calling communist propaganda disrespectful to Vietnam veterans.

CBS’ “The Amazing Race” had its contestants travel to Hanoi, Vietnam where they learned communist anthems and were subjected to state propaganda. The contestants also traveled to Vietnam’s B-52 memorial, the site of a downed U.S. B-52 bomber.

Roughly 60,000 Americans died fighting the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong in the Vietnam war.

‘AMAZING RACE’ EPISODE SET IN HANOI SPARKS OUTRAGE OVER USE OF B-52 AS PROP, COMMUNIST SONG

The popular CBS reality show "The Amazing Race” is under fire for featuring an episode set in Hanoi, Vietnam, where contestants go to a B-52 Memorial, which is the wreckage of an American bomber plane shot down during the Vietnam War, to find the next clue in their televised round-the-world journey.
In the episode, the twisted metal of the downed plane is treated as any other prop, with a bright ‘Amazing Race’ ‘Double-U-Turn’ signed planted in front of it, signifying to contestants the next phase of their scavenger hunt.

This incident would be comparable to using Fallujah in Iraq for the site of a comedy show. Remember how many of our troops died fighting Islamist insurgents there…

This is an America Disgrace to use the dead solder( wearing any uniform) to make a Money Making show for CBS- Which I don't watch and won't watch because of their anti America sand with this Administration. They don't know truth or even how to spell it. This country was founded on God's Values, and Morals- not their and sure not CBS. How they care concerned about is money- and the left wing agenda of destroying America and our values of true right-and-wrong. AS an Infantry soldier in Viet Nam twice, shot and blown up-this is a complete slap in the face to all the parents, spouses, children and friends of the dead who gave all they had to give for the reasons to free the oppressed. CBS need a good history lesson about truth and the real foundation of our country. Chaplain(COL) John South Ret.

  3. So America can have their memorials and other countries can't. Talk about being the biggest possible hypocrite there is. CBS did a great job and always has no matter which country they go to on the Amazing Race. As a veteran I can say that people, especially veterans aren't happy unless their complaining.

    1. Peter: No one said the Vietnamese can't have their memorials. It isn't about that. It is about a network turning the sacrifices of our veterans and the propaganda of the communists into simple-minded props for the sake of advertising revenue and ratings. And I don't know where you served, but if a veteran wants to complain, then by God they have earned the right to complain. Especially when their fellow veterans are insulted....

  4. The war ended over 35 years ago. Time for people to move on. The US started the war, the US lost the war. It is a new generation, a new age, move on.

    1. I am sure you have never served this great country of ours in any capability, as a former American Marine I know the sacrifices that these men and women had to endure. We will never forget the sacrifice ,sweat, and blood these Americans endured as they put their country's need before their own.

    2. "Anonymous": You obviously have never lost friends in combat. War is not like a bad marriage. If you lived it, you would understand. If you saw the faces of dead friends at 2 AM for most of your life, you would understand. War is not just a bad dream or a bad steak at a restaurant. And the politics of it don't matter either. Old men started the war; young men fought it. Hate war, but love the warrior. If you truly understood war and what it does to warriors, you would not make such a condescending, holier-than-thou statement...You should be grateful to all of America's war veterans that you still have the right to make such a simple-minded, thoughtless remark...
